History of the Food Stamps Program: The 411
Food stamp assistance or, as the system has recently been titled by the United States government, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has a long and proud record of fighting against the hunger of men, women, and children throughout this country. As a federally funded program instituted to offer life giving sustenance for both rural and urban dwelling Americans, the United States Department of Agriculture technically administers the formal food stamp assistance guidelines, but, since each state in the nation as well as the District of Columbia has been charged with realizing both the approval of applicants and distribution of food stamp assistance benefits, the local governments continue to have a great deal of influence on just how their residents will eventually receive the food stamp assistance once admitted to the program.
The history of food stamp assistance within the United States has been somewhat garbled by so many limelight seeking elected officials and career bureaucrats attempting to take credit for the program or distance themselves completely from the origination and implementation of food stamp assistance according to the prevailing political winds. Though the modern incarnation of food stamp assistance actually uses Electronic Benefit Transaction cards instead of any tangible coupons, the USDA and various state governments employed genuine paper stamps for the grand majority of the past four decades.
Yes, previous generations were forced to stand in line in the local super markets counting out one and five dollar notes to pay for their family groceries alongside the candy and chips that helplessly remain part of the food stamp assistance bill. The unrestricted usage of food stamp assistance has been a focal point for criticism during the entirety of the programs existence. The average taxpayer quite rightfully believes that public funds should not provide for private pleasures, and, considering the skyrocketing incidences of obesity throughout the country, perhaps food stamp assistance should do more to urge proper nutritional guidelines.
In any event, though the purchasing powers of the food stamp assistance program have not dramatically changed over time, the means of distribution has evolved with great acclaim through the Electronic Benefit Transaction card despite some initial misgivings among our democratic institutions.
Over the years, as fewer and fewer Americans found themselves using stamps and most younger citizens blithely avoid the postal system altogether in favor of internet claims and payments (in most of the United States, applications for food stamp assistance can now even be downloaded from the government websites though theyll still require printing), the literal translation of food stamp assistance began to seem embarrassingly antiquated and potentially more costly over the long run for the administration of food stamp assistance.
Thus, in the summer of 2008, Congress finally made the step toward the EBT cards for a vastly more effective method of directing food stamp assistance to those people who have demonstrated a need for the program. Of course, whenever a popular and justly respected tradition faces significant change, there will be a certain segment of society that instinctually opposes any alterations, no matter how sensible they appear in hindsight, and the formerly controversial switch has proven a profound success for food stamp assistance programs throughout the United States.
With the steady increase of applications for food stamp assistance recently reaching thirty five million Americans including nearly twenty five percent of all children residing in this nation the need for food stamp assistance surely requires the best efforts of all state and federal legislators.
Food stamps are your right. You may be wondering how to go about a food stamps application. The good news is that applying for food stamps online is possible today.
